One of the most important systems in heavy goods vehicles is the cooling system. Its task is to ensure the efficient and correct operation of the engine. In vehicles of this type, the requirements for power and loads are much higher than in passenger cars, which is why maintaining the appropriate operating temperature of the engine and charge air is extremely important. Intercoolers and liquid coolers are helpful, which ensure optimal engine operation in various operating conditions. How do these systems work and why are they essential for the correct operation of heavy goods vehicles? We encourage you to read!
Intercooler – how does it work?
An intercooler, also known as a charge air cooler, is an element responsible for lowering the temperature of the air that enters the combustion chamber. In heavy goods vehicles, the air compressed by the compressor is hot. Unfortunately, warm air is less effective in terms of supplying oxygen to the combustion process, which reduces engine power and increases fuel consumption. An intercooler lowers the temperature of the air, which improves its density and oxygen content. This in turn results in improved engine efficiency, reduced exhaust emissions into the atmosphere and lower fuel consumption.
In heavy-duty vehicles, intercoolers are often located at the front of the vehicle, where they can effectively cool the air by exchanging heat with the surrounding air. In the case of heavy-duty vehicles, due to the high loads and operating temperatures, intercoolers must be large and efficient enough to meet the demands of the engine.
Cooler – how does it work?
The cooler in trucks is just as important as the intercooler, although its task is slightly different. The main purpose of the cooler is to maintain the correct temperature of the coolant, which circulates throughout the engine cooling system. The engine generates huge amounts of heat during operation, which, if not properly dissipated, can lead to overheating and failure. The cooler extracts heat from the coolant and transfers it to the atmospheric air. In this way, the correct engine operating temperature can be maintained.
In trucks, engines work under heavy load for a longer period of time, so an efficient cooling system is extremely important. Coolers in such vehicles are larger than in passenger cars, which allows for effective cooling of the fluid even in extreme conditions.
Intercooler and cooler cooperation
The intercooler and cooler work together to ensure optimal engine operation. While the intercooler lowers the temperature of the charge air, the cooler controls the temperature of the engine itself. Both of these elements are very important for the proper functioning of the drive unit, especially in the case of trucks that have to meet the challenges of long-term driving under heavy loads.
The cooperation of these two systems is particularly important in difficult working conditions, such as:
- driving uphill,
- transporting heavy loads,
- working in extreme outside temperatures.
Thanks to the effective cooling of both the charge air and the coolant, the engine can operate at maximum efficiency for a long time, without the risk of overheating or loss of power.
Summary
Both the intercooler and the liquid cooler are important elements of the cooling system of trucks. They are responsible for the correct and efficient operation of the car engine, preventing it from overheating and thus extending its service life. The intercooler cools the air that goes to the combustion chamber, while the liquid cooler lowers the temperature of the entire engine. As part of our offer, we deal with the regeneration of intercoolers, we also sell new components, both intercoolers and liquid coolers for trucks.
