Gearbox indicator light and “Gearbox fault” – when is the selector at fault?

Question:

“On the dashboard the gearbox light is on, the message ‘Gearbox fault’ appears, the car stays in N. Do I need to do a gearbox overhaul?”

Our answer:

Not always. In many modern trucks, the problem lies not in the gearbox itself, but in the gearbox selector – the electro-pneumatic module that controls the gear shift. A defective selector, position sensors or harness can completely immobilize the vehicle. Often it is enough to replace the selector (e.g. WABCO GS type) – such components are available from Arcoore.

Symptoms from the driver’s side

  • Gearbox light/control on the dashboard,
  • “Gearbox fault”, “Transmission malfunction” messages,
  • Transmission stays in “N” position or in one gear,
  • inability to engage/shift gears, sometimes jerking when trying to shift.

What does the tester show?

  • Transmission selector errors ,
  • errors of gear position sensors,
  • communication problems of the transmission controller ↔ selector,
  • sometimes pressure errors in the electro-pneumatic part.

Typical causes

  • worn or damaged gear selector ,
  • damaged position sensors (inside the selector or on the gearbox),
  • corrosion, moisture in the connectors, problems with the harness,
  • dusty pneumatic part (valves, air ducts).

What to replace first?

In practice, the repair often comes down to:

  • replacing the complete gearbox selector (e.g. WABCO GS3.3, GS3.6, etc.),
  • checking and possible repair of the harness and connectors,
  • replacement of individual position sensors, if external.

What does Arcoore offer?

Arcoore supplies:

  • gearbox selectors for popular trucks (e.g. man, DAF, others),
  • accompanying components (connectors, seals, accessories),
  • support in the selection of parts by OE number and symptoms.

Thus, many situations with the “Gearbox fault” light can be solved by replacing the selector, rather than a complete overhaul of the gearbox.

FAQ

With a transmission error, is it always necessary to drop the transmission and do an overhaul?

No. With errors like “gear selector/shift module fault”, the selector is most often to blame. Diagnostics should start with the control module, and only then move on to the inside of the transmission.

If the transmission shifts gears unsteadily, jerks or sometimes “loses” a gear – it’s a matter of time when it slams into N. It is better not to wait until the car is on the road – replacing the selector in advance usually comes out cheaper.
