EGR valves in DAF – yellow engine warning light and exhaust gas recirculation error

Question:

“There is a yellow check engine light on the DAF, an EGR error and a drop in power. Is it the EGR valve? When does it need to be replaced?”

Our answer:

In DAFs (e.g., XF and CF Euro 5/6), a very common cause of yellow check engine light and emission errors is a worn or baked EGR valve – often in tandem with EGR cooler problems. Symptoms include loss of power, smoke, increased combustion, sometimes coolant running out. The solution is to diagnose and usually replace the EGR valve, and often also the EGR cooler – you can find such parts for DAF at Arcoore (new and regenerated).

Typical symptoms in DAF

  • yellow check engine light,
  • messages related to exhaust emissions / recirculation,
  • loss of power, failure mode,
  • sometimes erratic operation, mounding, increased combustion,
  • possible loss of coolant (if the problem also involves the EGR cooler).

What errors does the tester show?

  • EGR flow errors (“flow insufficient/excessive”),
  • EGR valve position errors (“position fault”),
  • exhaust gas temperature errors, which indicate improper recirculation.

Why does the EGR valve in a DAF “run out”?

  • intensive operation in the city / on short routes,
  • a large amount of soot and carbon build-up in the intake system,
  • natural wear of the valve’s moving parts,
  • problem with the EGR cooler (cracks, leaks) – mixing of exhaust gases and coolant.

When to replace the EGR valve in DAF?

In practice, if:

  • EGR errors return after clearing,
  • the valve does not respond properly to control (checked with a tester),
  • EGR flow parameters are out of range,
  • symptoms (loss of power, smoke) are recurrent – then it is worth planning to replace the EGR valve, and in parallel check the condition of the EGR cooler.

What does Arcoore offer for DAF?

Arcoore supplies:

  • EGR valves for DAF (e.g. XF, CF series – depending on the engine version),
  • EGR coolers – new and regenerated,
  • sets of gaskets and mounting parts.

Thus, instead of “shooting” in the dark the entire emission system, you can:

  • replace a specific DAF EGR valve,
  • add an EGR cooler if necessary ,
  • restore proper engine operation and turn off the yellow check engine light.

FAQ

Is it possible to “turn off the EGR error in DAF in the software”?

Technically, some workshops do this, but it is not in compliance with regulations and risky (inspections, checks, insurance). A safer and ultimately cheaper solution is to repair the system – replacing the EGR valve and possibly the EGR cooler with working parts.

Not always, but in many cases these components wear out “together.” If the radiator is leaking and the valve is baked, replacing only one component may have a short-term effect. Therefore, it is worth evaluating both components and selecting a repair kit – this is where Arcoore’s offer (valves + EGR coolers for DAF) comes in handy.
